Project:2

1As a public librarian working with the public, quiet often our patrons come in looking for exciting reads or newly published books from their favorite authors. Hence I saw it fit that I introduce them to fantastic fiction so that they may be able to see what their authors has published and their recent release. Once they have seen the title of their authors it will be very easy for them to go to their nearest   book shop to purchase a copy of their choice.
As we all know that books or very pricey nowadays if the patron can’t afford to purchase that specific copy, I have also given them a option to trace their nearest library to determine if they have that book in stock and if they not members they can also join the library so that they can be exposed to many more authors which they most likely enjoy or those that write the same as their favorite author.

Lack of confidence on thy self /society

As i walked into  tonight 09/05/2017 my mind was all over the place as i was uncertain to what would be discussed in class, as I had missed the previous weeks class. I was however informed that we would be doing practicals.......my greatest fear was that I had missed a lot and the lecturer simply move on without even revising work from from the previous week but this was not the class as the session progressed everyone was hands and enjoying what was being introduced to us 😍.. Very Insightful  and useful tools which we got introduced to..Thanks Ms Shehaamah

Have you ever asked yourself why has this phenomenon called Internet Filtering introduced?  This software was designed to restrict or control the content a reader is authorized to access. Which means its utilized to restrict material delivered over the internet via the web,e-mail. In this day and age as parent we really propelled to monitor what are kids are exposed to, hence  I believe internet filtering is  a excellent way to protecting our future generation from most....by most I mean  not everything that they exposed to can be filtered hence we must be aware some things that they become exposed to we cant control.

Image result for Why internet filtering? A recent study by the Oxford Internet  Institute revealed that of the 515 (12-15 year old children) interviewed , 14% had a negative online experience, 8% had been contacted by strangers and almost 4% had seen someone who pretended to be them online. Very shocking indeed more reason why parent need to know what their children are up to whenever they spend sometime on the web.

Last night session has really left me thinking and wondering if its for the best or we just depriving our children from things that we think might deter with their morals, as we not around to monitor our kids doings twenty four seven. Until next time Lumka Andries ...............

Less is more nowadays- LETS DO E_BOOKS :-)

Image result for E-Books

As someone who is working in a public library I have always thought that is very impractical to venture into E-Books, little did I know that its the most practical and most convenient practice. Nowadays public libraries have to also have stock for  tertiary students which is very impossible to purchase considering the tight budget constraints which public libraries are faced with.

When libraries purchase any particular title copy for tertiary students, it very impossible to get multiple copies as they are very pricey and also limiting to the number of students who can use the very same copy at the same copy @ once. Another thing is that libraries are also faced with overflowing shelves, but if they were to try going the E-Book route the problem of space which they faced with would be resolved.

With all this being said let first look is meant by E-Books, according to Wikipedia a E-Book is  an electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a computer or specifically designed handheld device.

Devices Used to Access E-books:

Desktop & Laptop Computers

Handheld Mobile Devices

Image result for Handheld Mobile DevicesIts time that public libraries got into the problem as this would really benefit not only the patrons but also us as sometimes its very difficult to get nice recreational reading material which are most likely available in e-books. The other disadvantage is libraries are spending a fortune and don't even own the content they're spending that fortune on. In many cases, if they stop paying the fees, they lose the content they bought, hence they need to work with suppliers, who will be able to guide and direct them into the right path........Until next time :-)

Open Access

On the 11/04/2017 after I left class I had so much going on my mind, as the Lecturer had touched on the most interesting topic....which is Open Access to information. What is meant by open access information is putting emphasizes  on providing free access to scholarly material. Students and researchers can not only consult them for free but can also download, copy, print and distribute them.

As I sat and listened to the lecturer I realized that there are so many definitions of open access but the intent is always the same, which is removing barriers and providing access to information for all with no bias or restrictions.

However there are challenges that hinder the progress of Open Access which raise questions about its feasibility, such as the quality of OA journals, regarding their economic sustainability and funding.

As a prospective researcher I listened tentatively, through all that there which there lecturer kept on dwelling on, and that which caught my attention was Green Open Access: which is a mode of publishing in non open access journal but also self archiving it in an Open Access Archive. Green OA publishing articles such as preprints that precede formally published versions, the advantage for end users is that preprints maybe almost enough version of final formally published article and would suffice for their reference without having to pay heavy prices to acquire or access the published version (Bjork et al. 2008).

Like any student it has always been very frustrating to get any articles as there always seemed to be restrictions  to those that we of use to our research, but with universities taking up the pledge to sign the Berlin declaration  on  open access of which the UWC has also signed.  Have a look at UWC Signs Berlin Declaration . To be quiet honest this has also helped me put more informative discussions on my libguide project.

Mobile Literacy

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, there are so many important elements of owning a smartphone. You might find yourself busy with a hectic schedule, and there are certain elements of your life that will need you to sort out  and organize

As i sat In class there was so mach going on my mind, like any born free technology has  become an integral part of my daily routines and it has made my life so much  easier as certain things which require my attention can be done just by a "Click of a button". Of which one of those things is being able to access the library and its resources by  not having to physically go to the library, as most of my time is spent at work. Now any information that I may require via websites and mobile devices.

Image result for library 2.0This goes to show  how libraries have transformed in quest of providing and delivering services to library users. Library 2.0 has provided libraries with tools that have made library spaces interactive, collaborative which have been driven by community needs. However the real advantage for Library 2.0  can be achieved by adding advanced functionality and features directly to the content, this is according to Abram, 2005. More interestingly its believed that library schools curriculum lack advancement hence they need to introduce Web 2.0 courses into their curriculum, which will equip LIS professionals with skills and competencies that will be necessary to design dynamic and modern user orientated services.

Information just so useful available just by click a button .........

QR Codes, here is useful a link which I thought it might be useful to us all🐡 Lets all start scanning!!

Me attending this class has made me realize how much work our public libraries librarians still need as we far from being competent when it comes to technology .........So be with me as I travel this journey of learning πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

How inspiring, there I was frustrated trying to find my way in this jungle.......eventually I came across this. Our very own Dr Sandy Zinn has her own online knowledge library which I found very useful, she has bookmarked some useful websites and resources.......Quiet honestly I was and still am impressed. Here is a glimpse of what she has in store https://www.diigo.com/user/sandyzinn

Many hats we wear....How convenient !!

As librarians we wear different hats hence we consistently on the look out for tools and ways which can assist our patrons perform various tasks, which is making sure that they know how to use library resources or research, cause we cant always be available to answer every question that a patron may have.

Lib guides have been created as its the patrons one stop library subject resource, which have now made this journey of information seeking worth.

Micro blogging........... How amazing

Now we can exchange content in form of images or videos in platforms such as twitter, this content is called micro post.........how amazing I have learnt something and there is still more to come as we will be traveling this journey together.

What am I doing now? Ooh yes I am blogging, so now lets differentiate between two terms which we have come across in the previous two lectures which is blogging and micro blogging that are both forms of social networking.Blogging allows you to express yourself in a conversational manner in as many words as you like, whereas micro blogging is also known Twitter which is one of the platforms which was discussed in class. On Twitter the activities are short quick, concise and limited  to a number of characters.

Diigo

Enrolling myself into ICT studies is one of the best things that I have done for myself thus far in 2017. Little did I know that there are other  communities which specialize in sharing knowledge......Diigo is one research tool that really amazed me, as thats the first place that one is guaranteed to find any information on any research topic, hence the largest part of our day is spent online. All thanks to diigo know one can be more productive as information workflow has been restructured top suite our daily information need............As I have mentioned before! This is indeed going to be a worthy journey to travel...Lets fasten our seat belts and relax.
